Polyurethane (PU) is one of versatile polymers for coatings, adhesives and elastomers. Recently PU elastomers are attracting attention of researchers for the application in automotive parts where high modulus PU are required. In order to improve the modulus of PU elastomers, effect of hard segment length on the properties of PU elsatomers were systematically investigated. PU elastomer of different hard segment length were prepared from a PU prepolymer and series of chain extenders synthesized from 1,4-butandiol and 4,4’-methylenbis(phenyl isocyanate). We found that hard segment melting points and heat resistance as well as tensile modulus of PU elastomers increased with increasing the hard segment length in the system. It is postulated that the preparation of high modulus PU with chain extenders of appropriate length is simple and efficient route to optimize the performance of PUs. |
