Polyurethanes are generally synthesized by reacting polyols with isocyanate compounds. However, isocyanates are toxic compounds, and they require the use of phosgene in manufacturing. Here, we developed a non-isocyanate process for the production of polyurethane. α,ω-hydroxyl terminated poly(ether-carbonate) polyol was first prepared via carbon dioxide/propylene oxide copolymerization using a double metal cyanide catalyst. Next, oxalyl chloride and glycerol carbonate were reacted to synthesize a precursor having cyclic carbonate at an end thereof, and the precursor was reacted with a hydroxyl group of polyol. The synthesized cyclic carbonate-end polyols were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography. |
