Though p-xylene derived from naphtha reformate is consumed as raw material in the production of polyesters and polyethylene terephtalates in large amount, its separation from the reformate mixture is not easy. When a proper solvent for the p-xylene separation is available, the extractive distillation can be applied in the process instead of adsorption separation requiring a large amount of costly adsorbate and desorption followed by a distillation in final separation. In the extractive distillation 2-octanol has been utilized to examine the performance of p-xylene separation from its ethylbenzene mixture. Two-step extractive distillation was applied to obtain 99% purity p-xylene with 90% recovery. |
