Novel attraction between particle at oil-water interface and particle in bulk fluid via optical laser tweezers |

Pickering emulsion has been investigated a lot due to their various industrial applications. Many studies of interactions between particles on interface and between the interface and particles in water were conducted. However, the interaction between particles at the interface and particles in the bulk is barely studied. In our study, we found that an interaction between the particle adsorbed on the interface and the particle in aqueous phase was attractive. We assumed that particle in water forms an induced dipole caused by dipole of an interface attached particle. In this study, the probability of attachments at the interface is quantified according to surface functional groups of particle, electrolyte concentration, and separation between particles. Also, the force between particles was quantitatively measured using optical laser tweezers. This is first study to prove the colloidal dipole-induced dipole interaction. |
