Vesicles are formed spontaneously in the mixed surfactant systems of cationic octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (OTAC)/anionic ammonium dodecyl sulfate (ADS)/water. OTAC exhibits an excellent antistatic property and ADS is less hydrolyzed in acidic solutions and less skin-irritative than SDS. Vesicles are verified by TEM, encapsulation efficiency of dye, and the power-law,,in SANS spectra. From the DLS and LPA, their sizes are determined to be 400 nm-1.2 μm. And the lamellar thickness of vesicles is from 5 nm to 15 nm by SANS spectra. Absolute values of zeta potnetials are large, which is due to the repulsive interaction between vesicles. Also UV absorption spectra of vesicles remain almost the same for two months. These two results indicates vesicle is quite stable. Formation mechanism is explained by geometric analysis, critical packing parameter, ,where V, L, and a0 are volume, alkyl chain length of tail group and area of head group, respectively. Their values are 0.55 to 0.67, which corresponds to formation of vesicle. |
