Electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECO2R) enables direct conversion of CO2 to various chemical products (e.g. CO, MeOH), but CO2 electrolysis consumes a large amount of electricity and thus the economic viability of ECO2R technology relies sensitively on electricity prices. Modular and flexible operation of ECO2R system is one of the solutions to cutting off the energy cost while satisfying product quality. In this work, we optimize the hourly operation of a modular ECO2R process that produces synthesis gas. We assume different electricity price scenarios (e.g. seasonal variance, time change, etc.) and investigate economic benefits the system would gain via the modular and flexible operation. |
