Hybrid Nanoparticles of Conjugated Polymers and TiO2 for Photocatalysis Utilizing Deep Red and Near Infrared Light |

TiO2 nanocrystals are one of the most prominent photocatalysts, but its usage has been limited to ultraviolet light due to its bandgap for light absorption. In this study, we prepare hybrid nanoparticles based on a conjugated polymer to which TiO2 nanocrystals are covalently connected. The conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) with a diameter of about 200 nm have primary amine groups on their surface by assembling with a phospholipid that has amines in its polar heads. The primary amines on CPN surfaces were successfully coupled with carboxylic acids on the surfaces of TiO2 nanocrystals which were prepared by a ligand exchange reaction of pristine TiO2 nanocrystals with a diameter of 25 nm via a conventional amide bonding. We demonstrate the large CPNs covered with small TiO2 nanocrystals, and examine photocatalytic activity by deep red and near infrared light absorption from the CPNs and subsequent energy transfer to TiO2 nanocrystals. |
