Recently, lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are considered as the most suitable power source for electric vehicles because of high energy and power densities. Especially, Ni-rich layered cathode materials offer a high reversible capacity of > 200 mAhg-1 based on Ni2+/Ni4+ double redox reactions during cycling. However, they still suffer from structural instability and poor cycle performance induced by undesirable side reactions and cracking of particles. To resolve these problems, herein, we propose a facile surface engineering with piezoelectric LiTaO3 on the surface of Ni-rich layered cathode materials. We demonstrate that the surface protection with piezoelectric LiTaO3 is effective for enhancing the reversibility as well as mechanical strength, showing a stable cycle performance even at a high temperature of 60 ℃. We believe that this work would provide a practical guideline to the development of highly reliable Ni-rich layered cathode materials for LIBs. |
