Polymeric Membranes Containing Amine-Branched Poly(amidoamine) Dendrimer in High-Mw PEO for CO2 Capture |

We have reported the fabrication of defect-free high molecular- weight PEO membranes with improved separation and mechanical strength compared to conventional membranes using amine-branched poly-(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer as an organic filler. The PAMAM dendrimer was synthesized via two-step addition polymerization consisting of Michael addition and amidation. The amine-branched PAMAM dendrimer was introduced to fill the interfacial voids between crystallites and enhance the gas separation performance. The primary amines in PAMAM facilitate CO2 transport by increasing solubility of CO2. The PEO/PAMAM membranes show ∼6 times greater CO2/N2 selectivity than that of neat PEO. The PEO/PAMAM membrane with 2.5 wt % PAMAM loading has a CO2 permeability of 32.3 barrer and a CO2/N2 selectivity of 42. |
