Hydrogel-Incorporated Nanofiber Scaffolds for Biomedical Applications |

In this presentation, a simple method to generate well-defined microscopic architectures composed of electrospun nanofibers and their potential application to biomedical fields are described. The photopatterning of polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogel on electrospun polymeric nanofibers led to the formation of two different microdomains in nanofibrous mats: a bare nanofiber region and a hydrogel-entrapped nanofiber region. If microwell-shaped hydrogel micropatterns were fabricated, resultant micropatterned nanofiber matrices was capable of generating cell and protein micropatterns due to the different interactions that cells and proteins have with PEG hydrogels and nanofibers. We demonstrated that resultant hydrogel-incorporated nanofiber scaffolds could be utilized for studying cell-cell interaction and controlling stem cell fate. |
