Enhanced removal of nonbiodegradable organic matter is required for water reuse, at the lowest energy consumption. This study focused on the production of molecular hydrogen during electrochemical treatment of municipal wastewater containing the organic pollutants and colloids. The electrochemical system used in this study consists of BiOx-TiO2/Ti anode and two stainless steel cathodes. With the electrode system, the hydrogen energy efficiency incresed up to 60% while removing 90% of chemical oxygen demand. Ironically, however, the organic carbon content in treated water was found to remain unchanged or increase during electrochemical oxidation. |
