Electrochemical Synthesis of Ammonia Using Copper-Sulfide Catalyst at Ambient Condition |

Ammonia, one of the most demanded chemicals worldwide, has been emerged as hydrogen energy—eco-friendly energy— carrier. Hitherto, Ammonia had produced with the Haber-Bosch process, reacting gaseous hydrogen and nitrogen at a high temperature and pressure using Fe-based catalysts due to dissociate the strong N≡N bonds. This process requires a lot of fossil fuels for reforming the reactant hydrogen gas and purifying atmospheric nitrogen, annually consuming approximately 2% of global energy and contributes 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions leads to severe environmental pollution. To solve these problems, we electrochemically reduced nitrogen to ammonia at ambient condition. In this report, copper-sulfide catalysts synthesized by thermal method were used as catalysts. The faradaic efficiency and production rate of ammonia were quite high among metal sulfide catalysts. Moreover, regeneration process can overcome the durability weakness of copper sulfide-based catalysts. |
