Ionically cross-linked alginate-based ferrogels for on-demand drug release |

Hydrogels have been considered as a potential delivery system in many drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. Ferrogels that are responsive to magnetic field also found potential in various drug delivery applications. In this study, alginate-based ferrogels were prepared from alginate solution and iron oxide nanoparticles by ionic cross-linking with calcium ions. Mechanical properties of alginate-based ferrogels were regulated by varying the concentration of polymer, calcium ions and iron oxide nanoparticles. These ferrogels reduced its height, when magnetic field was applied to the bottom of the gels. The deformation of alginate-based ferrogels released model drug under the magnetic field. |
