Gold nanorods, one of important member of the novel-metal nanoparticulates, are promising candidates for photothermal therapy of cancer, biosensing applications, and molecular imaging because of their unique properties such as photothermal effect by the strong electromagnetic radiation. However, gold nanorods have several limitations to apply in biomedical research field because of the cytotoxic hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) which stabilizes the colloidal dispersion of nanorods. Therefore, surface gold nanorods should be modified or coated by biocompatible materials. In this work, surface modification of gold nanorods was carried out using simple modification mehtod for decrease of cytotoxicity and therapeutic agent, which destroys the tumor cell without harming healthy cells after near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. |
