Singlet oxygen generating titanium oxide nanoparticles for non-invasive cancer surgery |

Traditionally, surgery has been the only cure for tumor. Technological advances have catalysed a shift from open surgery towards less invasive techniques. Apart from radiotherapy, laser ablation and high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). The clinical applications of photodynamic therapy (PDT), however, have been hindered because presence of lihgt which cannot reach deep tissues in the body. To overcome these issues, we designed hydrophilized TiO2 nanoparticle (HTiO2 NPs) which could be activated by HIFU to generate ROS in vivo. In order to prepare HTiO2 NPs, polysaccharide was chemically anchored on the TiO2 NP. We have success demonstrated the physicochemical properties of HTiO2 NPs. Also, activated TiO2 NPs can activate immune response to tumor, tumor vessel destruction and treat the deeply set liver tumor. These results prove the feasibility of using TiO2 nanoparticles as sonodynamic therapeutic agents for non-invasive cancer surgery. |
