Highly Luminescent and Multifunctional Zero-Dimensional Ternary Lanthanide Halide Colloidal Nanocrystals |

Herein, we report the syntheses of novel, highly luminescent, nearly monodisperse zero-dimensional (0-D) ternary lanthanide halide colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) for the first time. The ternary lanthanide halide NCs are synthesized via heating-up method and exhibit high size and shape uniformities. The ternary lanthanide halide NCs contain completely isolated octahedral units, resulting in 0-D ternary metal halide structures. Therefore, these NCs exhibit deep-blue bright photoluminescence (PL) under ultraviolet (UV) excitation, and the PL properties are tunable by changing the lanthanide cations within the octahedral units. High photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) are observed. In addition, we observed the paramagnetic properties of the ternary lanthanide halide NCs owing to the unpaired electrons within the f-orbitals of the trivalent lanthanide ions. This study provides synthetic guidance for the rational design of novel lanthanide-based 0-D metal halide NCs, which are potentially applicable for use in highly efficient, multifunctional NC emitters. |
