A variety of conjugated small-molecules have been studied as photoactive materials in organic photovoltaics (OPVs), showing distinct advantages over typical polymeric materials having well-defined structures and more reproducible synthesis and higher purity etc. Intra- and/or inter chain non covalent Coulomb interactions were considered to minimize the torsional angle along the backbone thereby improving the planarity of the chain. In this study, we have designed and synthesized a series of p-type small molecules containing non covalent Coulomb interactions (such as hydrogen bonding) with modifications through end-capping groups. Furthermore substitution of different terminal electron withdrawing groups (INCN, rhodanine, and dicyanovinyl) using the same back bone leads to tune the bandgap and control absorption. |
