Economic assessment of green hydrogen delivery via multiple liquid carriers |

In the current era of climate change and depleting fossil fuel resources, green hydrogen is a potential candidate to mitigate large dependency on fossil fuels and still abiding by the strict environmental regulations. Green hydrogen is increasingly recognized as one of the best possible options to achieve the global climate neutrality goal, but its low volumetric density presents significant challenges that need to be addressed. However, storing hydrogen in other chemicals such as Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHCs) and liquid ammonia can be a potential solution to address the issue. Therefore, this study presents an economic assessment of five hydrogen supply chain infrastructures: (a) Liquid hydrogen; (b) LOHCs (methanol, di-benzyl toluene, and methylcyclohexane); and (c) liquid ammonia. The results show that liquid ammonia is the best carrier followed by methanol for long term storage and transportation of hydrogen. The levelized cost of hydrogen was found to be $ 8.31/kg and $ 9.24/kg for ammonia and methanol, respectively. |
