Preparation and Analysis of Regenerated Silk Fibroin Fiber Using Various Solvent Systems |

Silk fibroin (SF) is a water-insoluble and fibrous protein from Bombyx mori silkworm. Due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability, SF has been investigated as a natural protein material that can be applied to biotechnological and biomedical fields. Therefore, we prepared SF fiber by a wet spinning process using several solvent systems and methanol as a coagulant. Regenerated SF could be dissolved up to 15% (w/v) in lithium chloride/dimethylsulfoxide (LiCl/DMSO), formic acid, and hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP). The concentrations of dope solution affect the formation of SF fiber. The morphology of the fiber was examined by field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The ultimate stress, breaking strain, and modulus of the SF fiber were measured by Material Testing Machines. In this study, we successfully prepared SF fiber using various solvent systems and conducted several experiments for characterization. |
