Many attentions to the critical problems on the conventional energy system such as environmental issues and the depletion of fossil fuels lead to social needs to a sustainable energy supply system. The sustainable system may include new system components such as renewable energy resources as well as environmentally modified system such as the conventional facilities coupled with carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology framework. However, it is still unknown which is the economically and/or environmentally best combinations of the energy supply system? Therefore, this paper aims to present a new design approach of the sustainable energy supply system by integrating renewable and conventional resources with CCS technology, using a multi-objective optimization technique of the economics and the environmental protection. The proposed optimization model which involves two objective functions (the total required cost and the total CO2 emission rate) is formulated through a mixed integer linear programming (MILP). The capability of the proposed model is illustrated through an application study of the transportation sector in the future Korea. |
