Effect of Organic Solvent Addition in Biodiesel Production on Immobilized C.antarctica Lipase B variant |

Waste animal fat contains a lot of free fatty acid and saturated fatty acid, which makes it faster to solidify in room temperature compared to vegetable oil, therefore, the issues related to pipe clogging and solidification of fat in enzyme support may arise. Organic solvent can be used to dissolve fat and further reduce the melting point of fat while it can also be used to extract glycerol from immobilization support. Therefore, organic solvent effect in enzymatic biodiesel production was investigated. Solvent composition variation experiments with stepwise addition and total addition of methanol were carried out to observe the effect of solvent over enzyme productivity. It was found that the biodiesel yield is not significantly increased even at optimum solvent concentration and reaction condition while the use of DMF and DMSO reduce the yield significantly at concentration more than 5% of oil load. The effect of organic solvents for washing immobilized enzyme after supercritical fluid process was also tested. The result showed that acetone and acetonitrile did not reduce the enzyme activity significantly compared to the other solvents. |
