제목 The role of hydrogen peroxide in the emulsion polymerization of methylmethacrylate(MMA) in the absence of initiator
초록 The emulsion polymerization of methylmethacrylate(MMA) was carried out without initiator in the presence of various contents of hydrogen peroxide aqueous solution(28% in water) in DDI water medium. Two different systems were used in the presence and absence of surfactants using various surfactants such as SDS, SDBS, Sodium 1-dodecanesulfonate and some of cationic and nonionic surfactants. Although without initiator, the monomer conversion reached to 70-80%, resulting in the hydrogen peroxide working as an initiator upon thermal treatment. Among various surfactants, the anionic surfactant such as SDS, SDBS and Sodium 1-dodecanesulfonate showed the highest conversion. The further results were discussed in terms of monomer conversion, molecular weight, surface tension and SEM photography. As a consequence, the anionic surfactant forms the micelle for letting the hydrogen peroxide radical to initiate and propagate the reaction.
