Water-like behavior of ionic liquids in composite membranes for high temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells |

Composite membranes consisting of room temperature ionic liquid (IL) and sulfonated polymer were prepared and characterized for their application to the anhydrous high temperature PEFCs. The ionic conductivity of several IL and their composite membranes were investigated to study the behavior of IL in the composite membranes. The ionic conductivity increases with elevating temperature. The various contents of IL in composite membrane were employed, and the proton conductivity was found to increase with increasing IL contents. Degree of sulfonation of sulfonated polymer also effect on the ionic conductivity. In addition, the performance of composite membrane under anhydrous system was depending on that of polymer matrix under fully hydrated condition. As a result, these IL in composite membranes behave like water in water swelled polymer. These IL-based membranes are proposed as new polymer electrolytes for high temperature PEFCs. |
