The waterborne polyurethane (WPU) / hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) nanocomposites were prepared by chemically incorporating vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) modified HEC (called VC) into the WPU. Effects of VC on the contact angle, gel content, thermal, and mechanical properties of the cast films were studied. The biodegradation of the chemical hybrids in cellulase solution and buffer solution were evaluated in terms of weight loss and tensile property change with incubation time. The VTMS modified HEC provided the chemical hybrids with multifunctional crosslinks and significantly enhanced tensile modulus and strength of the hybrids as well as biodegradability. When the hybrids were incubated in cellulose solution, significant weight loss and tensile strength decrease were noted. |
