To fabricate the uniaxially oriented smart window with redox responsivity, perylenediimide-based reactive mesogen (P-RM) was newly designed and synthesized. Based on the results of structural and optical properties analyzed using scattering, spectroscopic, and microscopic techniques, it was confirmed that P-RM was lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal (LCLC) phase which was induced by π-π stacking and ionic repulsive force among self-assembled nanocolumns. The P-RM smart window fabricated by 40 wt% H2O solution, mechanical shearing, and polymerization was capable of reversible modulation of the polarization bandwidth which can selectively polarize specific wavelengths or polarize all visible light wavelengths using controlling the redox state of the LCLC phase. The P-RM smart window cans be used in diverse field like flexible device, smart window, and anti-counterfeiting filter.
