This study provides a full life cycle assessment (LCA) comparing conventional high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and oxo-biodegradable HDPE bags. The conventional HDPE carrier bag is widely used, and is often given away free of charge by shops and supermarkets. In this study, the environmental impacts associated with conventional HDPE and oxo-biodegradable HDPE bag are evaluated using LCA method. The functional unit is defined as the production, use and disposal of a single conventional bat and alternatives of the same capacity. The system boundary is designed as ‘cradle to grave’. The results of impact assessment are presented and include results in terms of global warming potential, abiotic resource depletion, acidification, eutrophication, ozone layer depletion, photochemical oxidation, human toxicity, fresh ware aquatic ecotoxicity, marine aquatic ecotoxicity and terrestrial ecotoxicity. |
