Nafion of DuPont company, widely used as a proton exchange membrane, is a random copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoro sulfonic acid. This polymer has has a high proton conductivity because its sulfonic acid group of PFSA by forming ion conducting cluster in aqueous media. However, high content of ionic groups of the copolymer might require a sacrifice in its mechanical strength. In this study, to improve the mechanical properties of the copolymer while maintaining its high proton conductivity, we tried to form bridges between polymers. The cross-linking between polymers is also expected to affect the water uptake and dimensional stability. A Click reaction between sulfonyl fluoride and nucleophiles, known as a SuFEx reaction, was used for the purpose. The effect of the cross-linking reaction was determined by characterizing thermal and mechanical properties of the resulting polymers. |
