In this study, a simple fabrication method for the direct formation of highly-roughened microstructure on a fluoropolymer surface using a simple ion beam irradiation was described to control wettability. A fluoropolymer surface was wholly irradiated by an ion beam at the lower current density, and then was re-irradiated by an ion beam irradiation through a pattern mask at the higher current density to directly form a highly-roughened microstructure. Based on the results of surface analyses such as chemical structure and composition, morphology, and wettability, the wholly-irradiated surface of the microstructured fluoropolymer was more hydrophilic due to the predominantly ion beam-induced chemical change, while the selectively re-irradiated surfaces were more hydrophobic due to the mainly ion beam-induced morphological change. |
