The characteristics of lignin extracted from the 4 species herbaceous biomass (rice straw, rice husk, barley straw and miscanthus) using organic solvent (ethanol) were compared. The fractionation process was carried out at 170 °C and 190 °C for reaction temperature, 30 min, 60 min and 120 min for reaction time. The ethanol concentration, sulfuric acid concentration, and solid:liquid were fixed at 60%, 0.25%, and 1:10, respectively. The lignin extraction yields were increased with increasing reaction severity in all biomass. At the most severe condition (190 °C and 120 min), the lignin extraction yields from rice straw, rice husk, barley straw and miscanthus were 53.1%, 55.2%, 51.1%, and 83.1%, respectively. In addition, the lignin purity was higher than 96.0% in all biomass. To compare the hydroxyl group composition, molecular weight and chemical bonding of extracted lignin, 31P NMR, GPC, and FT–IR analysis were performed. |
