제목 Improving Carbon Utilization Efficiency in Microalgal Cultivation by Using Bicarbonate as a Carbon Source
초록 Microalgae can convert CO2 into biomass that could be used to produce various products by photosynthesis. Supplying CO2 gas for microalgal culture requires high costs. In contrast, supplying CO2 in the form of NaHCO3 could be cheaper and have higher carbon utilization efficiency. In this study, we cultivated a microalga, Tetraselmis sp. MBEyh01L, using NaHCO3 instead of CO2 gas purging in 5 L continuously stirred tank reactors using modified f/2-Si medium with different NaHCO3 concentrations. As a result, up to 0.60 g/L/d of biomass productivity was achieved when 20 mM of NaHCO3 was supplied intermittently. Consumption of NaHCO3 by microalgae increased the culture pH, and pH-stat operation was needed to ensure high carbon utilization efficiency, and the carbon utilization efficiency was 81%, higher than that of CO2 gas supplied culture. The results show that with appropriate culture mode, algal culture using NaHCO3 can be an effective method to capture and valorize CO2.
