Activation study of ferrihydrite-based catalysts for syngas to high value-added products |

Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is an attractive technology to convert syngas (CO+H2) into synthetic liquid fuels and high value-added chemicals. Precipitated iron-based catalysts are highly promising for the FTS. Since the as-prepared precipitated iron-based catalysts are composed of hematite, an inactive phase for FTS, they need to be converted to active iron carbides for FTS through proper activation pre-treatment in a flow of CO-containing gas. In this study, we found unique activation behavior of the ferrihydrite-based catalysts, that is, positive dependence of catalytic performance on the syngas pressure in the catalyst activation process. This is totally different from that of the conventional hematite-based catalysts. We attribute the advantageous catalytic performance to the favorable formation of specific iron carbides such as ε'-Fe2.2C. |
