The newly designed and synthesized cyclosiloxane-based AIEgen (D4M) has unique phase transition behaviors resulting in its switchable optical properties. On the basis of microscopic and scattering results, it was realized that D4M has a low-ordered smectic mesophase and very slow crystallization rate due to flexible siloxane ring. In addition, different domain sizes can be kinetically controlled, which affects the transmittance of D4M film. The photoisomerization of cyanostilbene moieties in D4M induced the isotropic phase and the reverse conformational change of D4M can occur by high thermal energy. Taken together, unique and photopatternable optical switching behaviors of D4M were demonstrated.
