We newly synthesized cyanostilbene-based AIEgen (TMSCS) for reversible optical switching in both transmittance and luminescence. From phase transition analyses, it was found that TMSCS has low-ordered smectic phase and crystallizes very slowly at room temperature. Also, cooling rate has a big effect on the domain size of TMSCS. In addition, the photoisomerization of cyanostilbene moieties in TMSCS induces changes in optical properties. Taken together, unique phase transition behaviors, kinetically controlled domain size, and reversible photoisomerization of TMSCS result in its switchable optical properties, which allows reversible optical switching and patterns.
