Enhanced CH4 oxidation activity of Pd/Pt bimetal catalysts: Effects of Pd:Pt ratio and exhaust conditions |

The excessive use of natural gas, primarily CH4, demands controlling slipped CH4 emissions in the after-treatment catalytic system. However, the CH4 oxidation requires a high reaction temperature due to its stable C-H bonds, where water in the feed also severely inhibits catalytic activity. Motivated by this, we provide a parametric investigation for designing an effective methane oxidation catalyst in the typical catalytic formulation based on Pd/Pt supported on alumina. The catalytic performance was characterized as a function of the Pd/Pt molar ratio (1:0, 9:1, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, 1:9 and 0:1) in the realistic variation of reaction environments (from methane-rich to methane-lean feed). At this KIChE spring conference, we will present the catalytic behavior of methane oxidation with systematic observations from the packed-bed reactor, surface analysis and computational calculations of density functional theory (DFT). The enhanced methane oxidation activity will be discussed from the standpoint of the synergetic impact of PdO-Pt active sites on oxygen adsorption, methane reactivity and water inhibition. |
