In nature, nacre is composed of 95% brittle calcium carbonate platelets and 5% of ductile biopolymers. Despite its high filler contents, it exhibits superior mechanical properties because of its brick and mortar structure. In this research, we have been inspired by the nature wisdom and fabricated montmorillonite (MMT)-cellulose nanofiber (CNF) nanocomposites via simple vacuum filtration. We compared properties of CNF-MMT composites with various CNF/MMT ratio, for example structural, chemical, optical, and mechanical properties. With the results, the nanocomposites show the potential to become environmentally friendly biomaterials.
