Preparation of fluorinated activated carbons and their asymmetric capacitive deionization characteristics |

Fluorination is an effective treatment method for introduction of fluorine atoms on carbon materials and increase in polarity due to their high electro-negativity. In this study, fluorinated activated carbons (ACs) were prepared for an application in an asymmetric capacitive deionization (CDI). Pore properties and surface chemical properties of fluorinated ACs were analyzed by N2 adsorption/desorption isotherm and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. Electrochemical properties were also investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The asymmetric CDI cells were fabricated with two different electrodes: an untreated AC electrode (ACR) as a counter electrode and a fluorinated AC electrode (ACF) as a cathode (RF-) or anode (RF+). The specific electro-sorption capacity of ACF was improved 54.2% compared to that of ACR. It is determined that ACF has a cation attractive property originated from high electro-negative fluorine functional groups on the ACF surface. |
