제목 Flexible Devices for Controlled-Release Drug Delivery on Cerebral Cortex
초록 Drug delivery is an extremely broad area of research. Moreover, timing of drug release may affect the efficacy. Any means by which drug delivery can be actuated and controlled is, therefore, of interest, and there should be no surprise that microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have received considerable attention over the past decade in the drug delivery field. Microfabrication technology has enabled to develop the implantable controlled released microchip devices with improved drug administration and patient compliance. Nevertheless, the rigid and bulky semiconductor chips have limited its uses as in vivo devices due to incongruent contact with the corrugated and curved surfaces of organs such as the brain, eye, and heart. To solve these limitations, we study a conceptual strategy for the fabrication of controlled and pulsatile drug delivery on a plastic substrate via a laser lift-off (LLO) process. The microdevice was transferred to flexible PET film substrate with thin metals membrane and SU-8 reservoirs for the neurotracer conjugated drug loading. The thin and flexible characteristics enable smooth insertion of this device to potentially uneven cortical field beneath the skull without significant damages in the brain. We confirmed that this device can be adopted to localized controlled-release of drug into cerebral cortex freely moving mice after implantation of device.
