Synthesis and characterization of sulfonamide polyphenylene containing benzophenone moiety via nickel catalyzed polymerization |

A series of sulfonimide based polyphenylene membranes containing benzophenone moieties were synthesized via Ni(0) catalyzed polymerization. The sulfonimide monomer was prepared from Sodium 3-(2,5-Dichlorobenzoyl)benzenesulfonate and sulfamoyl fluoride. Polymerization was carried out with sulfonamide monomer and 2,5-dichlorobenzophenone. The monomer has good reactivity in polymerization by electron withdrawing group as benzophenone and Sulfonimide groups have higher acidity than sulfonic acid group. Membranes, including benzoyl segments without ether linkage, also provided good dimensional stability. Morphology of the polymers matrix was greatly affected by the membranes’ properties and stability. A series of membranes were studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Membrane properties will be studied with regard to ion exchange capacity (IEC), proton conductivity, water uptake, dimensional stability and Fenton test. Surface morphology will also be assessed by atomic force. |
