EGF-functionalized Au-melanin Nanoparticles for Photothermal Therapy |

We report biocompatible nanoparticles synthesized from melanin and gold nanoparticles (Au-melanin) as photothermal agents for hyperthermic destruction of lung cancer cells. To direct these nanoparticles tocancer cells, Au-melanin nanoparticles were coated with polythene glycol conjugated with epidermal growth factors (EGF-PEG). These EGF-PEG@Au-melanin nanoparticles displayed high stability in serum, excellent cellular uptake, and non-toxicity towards cells. A549 cells were incubated with EGF-PEG@Au-melanin nanoparticles and exposed to 808 nm irradiation to induce photothermal effects. The nanoparticles successfully destroyed A549 cells after exposure to near-infrared light, but left different cell lines unharmed.
