Large electric field–induced strain response under low electric field of lead-free BNT–ST–BA ternary piezoelectric ceramics |

Bismuth–based lead–free ceramics are some of the most promising candidates for actuator applications due to their large strain response. Despite these large strains, there still remains a problem for its safe transfer to practical applications, for instance, a relatively high operating field required to obtain the large strain properties. In this work, a lead–free Bi1/2Na1/2TiO3–SrTiO3–BiAlO3 (BNT-ST-BA) ternary piezoelectric ceramics has been proposed to enhance the electromechanical strain performance under low driving field. We found the highest Smax/Emax value as 707 pm/V at a relatively low electric field of 3 kV/mm was obtained in 2 mol% BA modified BNT-ST ceramics. It is suggested that the naturally induced nonergodicities in ergodic relaxor are responsible for the excellent strain properties. We believe that the obtained result in this study can be a promising candidate for actuator applications. |
