The biotechnology industry has grown several folds during the past decade. Such growth and advances in the field resulted in novel products and services such as RNA vaccines and immunotherapy; however, they also brought forth increased risk and biohazard. The consequence of biohazard is fundamentally different from that of the accidents that take place in the petrochemical industry with respect to effect area and duration. As such, traditional accident analysis and prevention methods are generally not adequate and new approach is needed. In this study, we propose a systematic method for identifying and prioritizing causes of biohazard. The method employs accident data and experts’ judgment to rank the causes and helps to determine optimal set of preventive measures in a quantitative manner. A case study using the data provided by the South Korean government suggests that the proposed method enables comprehensive identification and ranking of biohazard causes that can be used for effective prevention of accidents in the future. |
