Biorefinery is an attractive alternative to petroleum refinery due to its CO2 mitigration potential. Especially, aromatic chemicals such as benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) are the largest volume petrochemicals in the world. The Diels-Alder cycloadditions (DAC) of furan compounds, e.g., 2,5-dimethylfuran (2,5-DMF) and 2-methylfuran (2-MF) and ethylene are the most atom-efficient routes for the production of renewable BTX. In this study, the DAC of 2,5-DMF and 2-MF with ethylene to xylene and toluene was investigated over mesoporous titanium phosphate catalysts. The catalysts were prepared using the sol-gel method with added surfactant. After synthesis, two different post-treatment conditions were applied to improve the acidity and crystallinity. The P/Ti molar ratios were also adjusted to control the acidity. |
