A phenylnaphthalene-based reactive mesogen (PRM) was newly designed and synthesized for advanced heat managing materials which have excellent heat dissipation capability. Based on the thermal and structural analyses, it was realized that PRM formed a smectic A mesophase. To fabricate the thermal conducting films, PRM was photopolymerized in both smectic A and isotropic phases. Regardless of the molecular self-assembly structure, the prepared films showed a high thermal conductivity over 1 W/mK. Moreover, the heat transfer performance of PRM films can be further enhanced in a certain direction by polymerizing under the magnetic field. Thus, the PRM films have the potential to be applied as heat managing materials for electronic devices.
