Liquid crystalline (LC) materials based on defect structures have been proposed as a new class of a self-assembling lithographic template over a decade. The development of simple and cost effective method for controlling the arrangement of LC defect structures on large-area flat surface is one of important goals in self-assembling materials researches. In this study, we introduce a simple surface printing method based on the micro-contact printing to achieve various arrangements of focal conic domains (FCDs) with large-area. Some metal salts as ink materials induce vertical alignment of liquid crystals, and help to separate and arrange FCDs. We successfully obtained various 2-dimensional arrangements of FCD with square, rhombic and hexagonal lattice and controlled the orientations of FCDs. Also, we could generate periodic FCD arrays on various substrates by applying the chemical surface printing method. |
