Photonic crystals show structural colors through a selective diffractionat stopband. It could be fabricated by self-assembly of colloidal particles. Whenthe colloidal particles are injected in the core of double-emulsion droplets,we can induce the attraction between particles by depletion. Then the particlesare crystallized to the hexagonal grains along the inner membrane ofmicrocapsules. However, it is challenging to generated large-sized singlecrystalline. Here, we design the large-sized single crystalline inmicrocapsules by centrifugation and ripening. W/O/W double-emulsion dropletsare generated by microfluidics. Polystyrene particles in the core are slowlydeposited unidirectionally by centrifugal force. Then they form singlecrystalline grains by depletion, and are merged into larger crystallites by ripening.Generated capsules show high reflection and have angle dependence. They can beserved as microcompartments of photonic designs, decoration oranti-counterfeiting. |
