제목 Robust and Reconfigurable Microfluidic Encapsulation of Cholesteric Liquid Crystals toward Photonic Applications
초록 Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) possess photonic bandgap owing to the helical arrangement of molecules. The CLCs reflect circularly-polarized light of a specific handedness and wavelength, exhibiting colors. The wavelength of the selective reflection, or the structural color, can be easily controlled by varying the concentration of a chiral dopant. Although such a unique optical property renders CLCs promising for various applications, their fluidity severely limits the ease of processing and structural stability. One way to overcome the limitations is to encapsulate CLCs in micro-containers or to solidify of CLCs. Here I have introduced several methods for CLC microencapsulation and solidification based on microfluidic system and photopolymerization. And the optical properties of CLCs encapsulated or solidified in various polymer systems are investigated according to the temperature, concentration of chiral dopants and handedness of chiral dopants.
