The clinical applications of cell microencapsulation have been hampered due to inadequate construction of microcapsules such as off-center encapsulation, a low fraction of cell-laden capsules, immense volume, and lack of controls over the thickness of capsules. In this study, we sought to develop a novel encapsulation method for complete, cell-center, and individual cell encapsulation by growing hydrogel from the cell surface. The results suggest that our technique potentially represents a simple means to overcome inevitable issues in cell encapsulation field. |
