To overcome poor dispersibility of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) in polymer matrix, the surface of MWNTs has been functionalized by covalent and non-covalent method. In particular, non-covalent functionalization of MWNTs is physical adsorption through π-π interaction between the surface of MWNTs and pyrene moieties, and can avoid the destruction of original chemical structure of MWNTs. Pyrene moieties having ureidopyrimidinone were synthesized and used to functionalize the surface of MWNTs via non-covalent method and quadruple hydrogen bonding. The functionalized MWNTs by quadruple hydrogen bonds with ureidopyrimidinone can be well dispersed not only organic solvent but also polyamide matrix. Polyamide/functionalized MWNT nanocomposites were prepared by solvent-casting and exhibited better electrical properties and mechanical properties, showings the lower sheet resistance and higher tensile strength, probably attributed to the better dispersion in polyamide matrix. |
