Uniform-sized cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) droplets doped with CB15 were prepared by a microfluidic method. The CLC droplets coated with PAA-b-LCP (PAA: poly(acrylic acid) and LCP: poly(4-cyanobiphenyl-4-oxyundecylacrylate)) (CLCPAA droplets) were pH-responsive in terms of change of the helical structure and the reflecting color pattern through protonation and deprotonation of the carboxylic group of PAA which causes the planar and perpendicular orientations, respectively. The CLCPAA droplets immobilized with glucose oxidase (GOx) and cholesterol oxidase (ChO) (CLCPAA-GOx and CLCPAA-ChO droplets, respectively) for glucose and cholesterol detections, respectively showed high sensitivity, good selectivity, and fast response although further optimization increase their performance as biosensors. The detection can be possible by observing the coloring pattern of the CLC droplet without a crossed polarizer-equipped optical microscope which are necessary for nematic LC biosensor systems |
