Functionalized cholesteric liquid crystal double-emulsion droplets by microfluidics |

Mono-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal double-emulsion (CLCDE) droplets were prepared by a microfluidic method. The CLCDE droplets in aqueous solution showed the unique structural changes and colors at the center which were dependent on the surface anchoring conditions. The CLCDE droplets decorated with PAA-b-LCP (PAA: polyacrylic acid and LCP: side chain LC polymer) showed the structural change between parallel and perpendicular anchoring depending on pH in aqueous solution. This structural change from parallel to perpendicular anchoring may cause color disappearance due to partial removal of the regular helical structure. So, the CLCDE can be applied widely. Several enzymes such as glucose oxidase, urease were immobilized to PAA on the CLCDE droplets. |
